Newly Elected Board Members

On September 20, 2003, Kelsey Batchelder, Judith Beyer, Roy Neville, Denise Reed and
Sandra Walters were elected to three-year terms on the Board of Directors of NAMI-NYS.

Kelsey Batchelder

My primary concern and focus is to press the New York State Administration to develop and implement a comprehensive, integrated system of care for those citizens who have a serious and persistent mental illness.

A member of NAMI since 1991, this is Kelsey Batchelder’s first term as a Director of NAMINYS. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of NAMI - New York City Metro, and has testified before an Assembly hearing on adult homes and represented NAMI-Metro in the New York/New York III housing campaign.

Judith Beyer
Emphasizing Research, Rehabilitation and Vocational Training.
Judith Beyer is Founding Vice President of NAMI-NYS, co-founder of Schenectady NAMI, NAMI-NYS Research Co-Chair, and have served on the NAMI-NYS Nominating, Bylaws and Personnel committees. Last year, she served on the Conference, Government Affairs and
Research committees.

Roy Neville

I’m committed to the cause -- I wanted to return to the board because there is so much not done yet.

Roy Neville has served several terms on the NAMI-NYS Board of Directors since 1986 and was its president for three years in 1989 and the early 1990s. Last year, although he was not on the Board, he served on the NAMI-NYS Government Relations and Insurance committees.
In Schenectady he has served as president or board member of his affiliate most years since our incorporation in 1988.

In 1986 my 29-year-old younger sister was found dancing barefoot in the streets of Harlem. She was taken to a nearby hospital and discharged the next morning. She leapt from the 14th-story window of her apartment a few hours later.

Denise Reed has worked as program director and manager for a state health care financing agency, vice president of a managed care consulting firm, and executive director of a community based, primary care network. She is currently the principle of a health care consulting
practice. This will be her first term as a NAMI-NYS Director.

My brother's illness has showed me the importance of family
involvement, non-stop advocacy, fighting against the stigma that surrounds mental illness and increasing public understanding.

This will be Sandra Walter’s second term as Director of NAMI-NYS. Last year, she served as a member of the Finance Committee and participated in many important advocacy initiatives directed at the Albany officialdom. She has also served as a Director of NAMI-New York City Metro but has since relocated to Albany, which enables her to be even more involved inthe work of NAMI-NYS, particularly in its advocacy efforts.
