Awards
were presented at this year's Educational Conference for
outstanding efforts to enhance the quality of life for
people with serious mental illness to:
Dr.
John Oldham, Director of the New York State Psychiatric
Institute and Acting Chair of the Department of Psychiatry
at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, for "Distinguished
leadership and compassion for the well-being and future
of people with mental illness and their families."
The
Goddard Riverside Community Center Project Reachout for
"outstanding services to homeless people with mental illness."
The staff seeks out homeless people on the streets and
in the parks of New York City to provide them with food,
clothing, medical and psychiatric care, both transitional
and permanent housing, and job training and job placements.
Mona Bergenfeld, Director of Project Reachout, accepted
the award on behalf of staff.

Julia
Rosner for "outstanding legal advocacy." As staff
attorney for the Mental Health Law Project of Manhattan.
she "stepped up to the plate" and prosecuted wrongdoing
in the adult home industry. She did excellent work
in completing cases and achieving desired outcomes.
Sarah Kershaw and Clifford Levy of the New York
Times received NAMI's Annual Media Awards in recognition
of their outstanding reporting on adult homes, particularly
the story, "Inquiry Finds Mentally Ill Patients
Endured ' Assembly Lone' Surgery" in the Leben Home.
This has turned the tide and now the Office of Mental
Health, the Health Department and |
the
Quality of Care Commission are working as a committee to
do more frequent inspections and follow up.
The
2001 Muriel Shepherd awards for distinguished advocacy
were presented to Ione Christian, NAMI NYS Vice President
and Government Affairs Co-Chair. and to Rena Finkelstein,
NAMI NYS Board member and President of FAMILYA.
NAMI
NYS Board members whose terms of office were completed
were presented with awards for "Outstanding efforts to
enhance the quality of life of people with mental illness
and their families" They were: Michael Silverberg, Ione
Christian, Dr. Aron Lukrec, George Shaw, Florence Weil
and Jeffrey Olson (in absentia).
