The Children's Defense Fund has many useful resources and reports on children's issues, as well as search engine and site index.

Families USA
This web site has one of the most comprehensive clearinghouses for children's issues we have seen.

Healthfinder's Children's Health Page
This web site can lead you to selected on-line publications, clearinghouses, databases, and support for children's health issues, as well as to government agencies and not-for-profit organizations dealing with children's issues.

Drug Assistance

The Medicine Program is an organization established by volunteers to help obtain prescription medications free of charge for those who cannot afford them. Visit their site at

Dual Diagnosis

NADD (National Association for the Dually Diagnosed)
This web site has detailed information on resources for persons dually diganosed with mental illness and developmental disabilities. There are also several informative conferences each year.

SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration)
SAMHSA's web site features many resources for dually diagnosed persons with mental illness and chemical addictions. One of the newer features is an automated locator service for drug and alcohol treatment facilities. To access this helpful service, go to their web site, click on "Looking for help with alcohol, drug, or mental health problem", then click on "Substance Abuse Treatment Locator"

General Health Sites

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) MedWatch
Medwatch provides a mechanism for consumers, health professionals, and manufacturers to report serious reactions with medications and medical devices. MedWatch provides a means for consumer voices to be heard in ongoing evaluations of medication safety and effectiveness.

Healthfinder
This web site can lead you to selected on-line publications, clearinghouses, databases, and support and self-help groups as well as to government agencies and not-for-profit organizations.

MedicineNet Home Page
Produced by a network of doctors, this site includes news and perspectives, treatment updates, health facts, a medical dictionary, and a pharmacy indexing commonly used prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

Medline Plus
This site provides free access to more than 9 million journal citations in MEDLINE and related databases as well as links to self-help groups and information on ongoing clinical trials.

Medscape
Primarily targeted toward professionals, the web site also offers a wealth of information that can be useful for family members and consumers. The news articles on mental health are comprehensive, evidence-based, and referenced. The site offers access to Medline and Search Drugs as well as electronic issues of the Schizophrenia Bulletin.

NOAH: New York Online Access to Health
This site is available in both Spanish and English and is an excellent consumer health information source.

PubMed
Another link to millions of medical articles. The search engine at the site enables the user to access citations which are often linked to full-text journals.

PhRMA
An organization representing approximately 100 U.S. pharmaceutical companies "that have a primary commitment to pharmaceutical research." The web site includes information on new medicines, and lists of PhRMA publications (which includes their directory of prescription drug patient assistance programs.)

This informative web page offers information on and links to purchase video-based information on mental health issues geared toward family members, consumers, professionals for use in a wide variety of settings and for personal growth.

Handling Your Psychiatric Disability in Work and School (Part of The Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University's Web Site)
This web page offers information on the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), how to file a complaint, how to disclose your illness to your employer, how work effects mental illness, how to deal with a mental illness while at school and much more. Includes a discussion board where you can submit and/or read personal stories.

Internet Mental Health
This site offers a free encyclopedia of mental health information to improve the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. The site includes information on the 67 most common psychiatric drugs.

Mental Health Net
Sponsored by CMHC Systems, a company that develops technology for mental health organizations, this site provides weekly new updates, information on disorders and treatments, professional resources, information on managed care and administration, and a monthly email newsletter, and a reading room with an index of over 8500 reference sources.

National Mental Health Services Knowledge Exchange Network (KEN)
"The National Center for Mental Health Services (CHMS) developed KEN for users of mental health services and their families, the general public, policy makers, providers, and the media. KEN is a national, one-stop source of information and resources on prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services for mental illness."

The Schizophrenia Home Page
A fantastic site with information organized according to users: people who have schizophrenia; families and friends of those who have schizophrenia; researchers; professionals; and students. This site also enables the user to search the top 100 psychiatry, medication, and support group sites.

The National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association is dedicated to educating about depression and bipolar disorder, fostering self-help, eliminating discrimination, improving access to treatment and advocating for research.

Mental Health Research Sites

Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI)
NKI is one of two facilities (the second being PI) that receive funding from the New York State Office of Mental Health to conduct psychiatric research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of severe mental illness.

National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD)
NARSAD raises and distributes funds for scientific research into the causes, cures, treatments and prevention of severe mental illness. This site provides answers to FAQ's and gives access to the NARSAD newsletter and educational pamphlets.

New York State Psychiatric Institute (PI)

Another state funded research facility, the PI site provides information on research, education and training, and clinical services.

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI)
The national organization that NAMI-NYS is affiliated with, the NAMI web site offers information on policy, research, books on mental illness, current news on mental illness and much more.

NAMI-NYC Metro
The largest NAMI-NYS affiliate, NAMI-NYC Metro's web site offers information on the diagnosis, symptoms and treatment of severe mental illness and offers practical information and coping tips for consumers and their families.

Friendship Network
The NAMI Queens/Nassau-sponsored Friendship Network's goal is to help alleviate the feelings of isolation and loneliness its members feel because of their illness. Through the Network, they meet members of the same or opposite sex and develop friendships. This user-friendly site provides valuable information on how to participate in this network.

New York City Voices
Specifically for New York City, New York City Voices is a journal for mental health consumers, families and professionals providing mutual support for living the most empowered and independent lives possible. The site has a large collection of recovery stories, links and archives.

American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
This site provides information on legislation, advocacy and research concerning adolescent psychiatry. Produced in English, Spanish and French.

American Psychiatric Association
The American Psychiatric Association represents over 40,000 psychiatrists in the US and abroad who specialize in the treatment of mental health and substance abuse disorders.

American Psychological Association
The APA is the world's largest association of psychologists. "APA works to advance psychology as a science, as a profession, and as a means of promoting human welfare."

The Empire State Association of Adult Homes and Assisted Living Facilities
The Empire State Association of Adult Homes and Assisted Living Facilities has useful information about adult homes and other assisted living options.

Mental Disability Rights International
MDRI is a Washington, DC based human rights organization dedicated to the enforcement of international human rights protections for people with mental illnesses. This grassroots group has been featured in several recent New York Times articles.

Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania
A website that combines the issues of mental health and aging. This site is intended to be a resource for people seeking practical information on mental illness, its connection to aging, and how to find appropriate, accessible help for older people in need.

National Mental Health Association
The National Mental Health Association was the nation's first citizen volunteer advocacy organization. The emphasis of the organization is on advocacy, prevention, information and referral, and public education. This site provides excellent legislative alerts on public policies affecting persons with mental illness.

National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse
